Ancient History

The history of Kenitra dates back to ancient times when it was known as Thamusida, a trading post established by the Carthaginian explorer Hanno. This early settlement played a significant role in trade and commerce in the region.

Colonial History

In March 1912, the French government signed the Treaty of Fez with Sultan Abd al-Hafid of Morocco, marking the beginning of French colonial rule. The French appointed General Hubert Lyautey as resident-general in Morocco, who focused on restoring order and establishing civilian administration. One of his key initiatives was to develop ports along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, leading to the establishment of Port Lyautey in 1912 as a military fort and town. The port opened in 1913 and quickly became the best river port in Morocco. The name “Kenitra” is derived from a culvert built at Fouarat Lake upstream of the kasbah, which was destroyed in 1928. In 1933, the French officially named the locale “Port Lyautey,” but it was renamed “Quneitra” upon Morocco’s independence in 1956.

Post-Independence Era

After gaining independence, Kenitra experienced rapid growth as a shipping center for agricultural products such as fruits, fish, timber, and minerals like lead and zinc ores. The city’s industrial area developed upstream from its port facilities. U.S. Naval Base
During World War II, specifically after Operation Torch in November 1942, American forces captured Port Lyautey and transformed it into a military base known as Craw Field. The U.S. Navy operated this base until 1947 when control reverted to France. However, during the Korean War era in the 1950s, significant expansions were planned for the base due to its strategic importance; at one point, it housed nearly 10,000 personnel making it one of the largest U.S. overseas bases outside Japan. The base remained operational through the Cold War until its closure in 1991.

Modern Development

Today, Kenitra is recognized not only for its historical significance but also for its strategic location and economic contributions within Morocco’s Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region.
It continues to serve as an important hub for transportation and commerce.
